Three people were arrested after a brawl involving 300 teenagers erupted on a New Jersey beach over Memorial Day Weekend, officials said.
Instagram video shows the large fight breaking out at a Margate beach near the popular “Lucy the Elephant” attraction around 2 p.m. on Saturday. The trio was arrested for assault and disorderly conduct, Philly.com reported.
A police officer was also hit with a Gatorade bottle in the chaos.
Several hours later the horde of teens made their way to a nearby Wawa — an apparent tradition during the holiday weekend for students from Pennsylvania and Cherry Hill, according to the news outlet. A dozen more people were arrested outside the convenience store on Washington and Ventnor avenues for alcohol, marijuana and fighting — seven of them juveniles, the remaining five under the age of 20.
“There’s not one of them from Margate,” Capt. Ken Bergeron told Philly.com.
He added there isn’t much police can do to legally disperse the crowd and curfew laws have proven difficult to enforce.
“As long as they’re not blocking the sidewalk, there’s not much we can do,” Bergeron said. “You come and they move. We leave, they come back. If we move them along after that, they go down to the beach.”
He said in the last five years, police have struggled with high schoolers coming to Margate and then getting into fights and stealing things from the beaches.
Mayor Mike Becker similarly bemoaned the rowdy crowds flooding the city every Memorial Day weekend, saying things had gotten “way out of hand.”
“We welcome all visitors, but we can’t tolerate this behavior,” he said. “It was a mess. This is probably the third year we’ve had the same thing over Memorial Day weekend: a total lack of respect for other people.”
