Firefighter who heard Princess Diana’s last words tells his tale

Two decades later, he speaks.

Xavier Gourmelon, the firefighter credited with briefly resuscitating Princess Diana at the scene of the Paris car crash that later took her life, is finally sharing his account of that fateful August 1997 evening with The Sun.

The 22-year veteran of the Paris fire department told the publication he and his crew were “very close” by and got to work right away, tending to the victims.

“The car was in a mess and we just dealt with it like any road accident. We got straight to work to see who needed help and who was alive,” Gourmelon said.

“The woman, who I later found out was Princess Diana, was on the floor in the back. She was moving very slightly and I could see she was alive.”

Gourmelon told The Sun he was unaware, at the time, how severe the late Princess’ injuries were. In fact, he said he believed she “had a slight injury to her right shoulder,” and nothing more.

According to The Sun, he “held her hand and told her to be calm,” at which time she asked him, “My God, what’s happened?”

“I gave her some oxygen and my team and I stayed by her side as she was taken out of the car. It was very quick because we didn’t have to cut any of the wreckage,” he shared, adding that within minutes she stopped breathing.

The firefighter “massaged her heart” and within seconds, Princess Diana was alive again.

“It was a relief of course because, as a first responder, you want to save lives – and that’s what I thought I had done,” Gourmelon said.

Princess Diana was killed 20 years ago in a Paris car accident.

“To be honest I thought she would live. As far as I knew when she was in the ambulance she was alive and I expected her to live. But I found out later she had died in hospital. It was very upsetting.”

Princess Diana, boyfriend Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul were all killed as a result of the crash.
